The Thacher C+T building design is the culmination of years of a detailed collaboration between the project team. Various structural systems were evaluated to determine which systems best suited the school's needs and budget for the facility. During initial investigations, steel framing, concrete shearwalls, and a concrete-filled steel pan deck floor system were evaluated and, through collaborative review and discussions, the final design migrated to a mixed system of steel cantilever columns, wood shearwalls, concrete shear walls, engineered lumber framing, targeted applications of steel framing and wood diaphragms supported by open web wood truss and engineered lumber framing. The structural system's not only needed to maintain seismic safety but also needed to be detailed meticulously to ensure all components came together to form the architecturally stunning structure. The T&S Structural team worked closely with the team from Blackbird Architecture to review every aspect of the design fit. This project is a perfect case study to exhibit the benefits of multidisciplinary collaboration and the stellar results a collaborative process can deliver. It was also the winner of the 2021 Award of Merit and Safety Award of Merit from Engineering News-Record - ENR California region in the K-12 Education category.
